Appliance installation in northern Melbourne homes

A new appliance is only useful once it is in place, level, connected and working. We install washing machines, dishwashers, freestanding ovens and cooking ranges in homes across northern Melbourne, connecting to the taps, drain and power point that are already there.

Installation follows the manufacturer’s instructions in the box. If the space, taps, drain or power supply do not suit the new appliance, we will tell you before anything is connected.

Washing machine installation

Front and top loaders need their transit bolts removed, their feet levelled and their hoses connected without kinks, or they can walk across the floor and leak on the first spin. We set the machine in place, connect it to your existing taps, route the drain hose into the trough or standpipe, and run it to check for leaks.

What a standard fitting includes

  • Unpacking and removing transit bolts
  • Connecting inlet hoses to existing washing machine taps
  • Securing the drain hose in the existing trough or standpipe
  • Levelling the machine and running a leak check

How long it takes

A normal washing machine fitting takes no more than 60 minutes. Stacking a dryer, removing an old machine or a tight laundry can add time, so mention those when you book.

When you need a licensed plumber

In Victoria, connecting the hoses of a washing machine or dishwasher to existing taps is not plumbing work under the Plumbing Regulations 2018 (regulation 12(2)(e)), so it can be done without a plumbing licence.

Installing new taps, moving taps, or adding or changing a drain is plumbing work and must be done by a licensed plumber. If your laundry needs that, we will tell you before the appointment.

Dishwasher installation and replacement

Most dishwasher jobs are replacements: the old unit is disconnected at the existing dishwasher tap and drain, slid out, and the new one fitted into the same cavity. We connect the new unit, secure it with the supplied brackets, level it and check for leaks.

If adjacent cupboard doors catch or sit unevenly, mention any cupboard hinge and door adjustments in your request. This is separate from changing the kitchen cabinetry to make an appliance fit.

Replacing an existing dishwasher

  • Disconnecting and removing the old dishwasher from the cavity
  • Connecting the new dishwasher to the existing tap, drain and power point
  • Securing and levelling the new unit
  • Refitting the kickboard where the appliance allows

Installing a dishwasher for the first time

Check the cavity width and height before you buy. A first-time install needs a suitable cavity, a dishwasher tap, a drain connection and a power point already in place. If the kitchen has no tap or drain connection, a licensed plumber needs to add them first, and a new power point is work for a licensed electrician.

Oven and cooking range installation

We install all major brands of oven and cooking range, within the limits of what a handyman can do. In Victoria, hardwired ovens and cooktops must be connected by a licensed electrician, and any work on gas appliances must be done by a licensed gasfitter. Tradie at Door does not do licensed electrical or gas work.

Freestanding plug-in ovens and ranges

A freestanding oven or cooking range that plugs into an existing power point can be unpacked, moved into position, levelled and fitted with any anti-tip bracket supplied with it. We then check the doors, shelves and controls work as the manual describes.

Built-in ovens

For a built-in oven, an electrician first makes the electrical connection. Once that is done, we fit the oven into the cabinetry cavity, secure it with its brackets and check it sits square with the surrounding doors and panels.

Hardwired and gas appliances

If your oven, cooktop or range is hardwired or runs on gas, tell us when you enquire. The electrical or gas connection must be done by a licensed electrician or licensed gasfitter, and we can work around their visit for the positioning and fitting.

Dryer stacking

Stacking a dryer on top of a front-loading washing machine saves floor space in a small laundry. It is available subject to the structure: the washer and dryer must be compatible, the manufacturer’s stacking kit must be on hand, and the floor must be level and solid enough to carry both machines. We check these on site before stacking.

Removing your old appliance

When a new appliance replaces an old one, we disconnect the old unit and move it out of the way so the new one can go in. If you would like us to take the old appliance away, there is a separate disposal or recycling charge, which is included in your quote so you know it before the job is booked.

FAQs

What does washing machine installation include?

We position the machine, remove the transit bolts, level it, connect the inlet hoses to your existing washing machine taps, secure the drain hose in the existing trough or standpipe, plug it into the existing power point and run it to check for leaks.

How long does it take to install a washing machine?

A normal washing machine fitting takes no more than 60 minutes. Removing an old machine, stacking a dryer or working in a tight laundry can add time.

Do I need a plumber to connect a washing machine or dishwasher?

Not for connecting to existing taps. In Victoria, connecting the hoses of a washing machine or dishwasher to existing taps is not plumbing work under regulation 12(2)(e) of the Plumbing Regulations 2018. New or moved taps, and new or changed drains, must be done by a licensed plumber.

Can you install a dishwasher where there wasn’t one before?

Only where a suitable cavity, a dishwasher tap, a drain connection and a power point are already in place. Adding a new tap, drain or power point is work for a licensed plumber or electrician, so we will tell you if your kitchen needs that first.

Do you install ovens and cooking ranges?

Yes. We install freestanding plug-in ovens and cooking ranges, and we fit built-in ovens once an electrician has connected them. Hardwired ovens and cooktops need a licensed electrician, and any gas appliance work needs a licensed gasfitter in Victoria. Tradie at Door does not do licensed electrical or gas work.

Can you stack my dryer on the washing machine?

Often, yes. It depends on the structure: the two machines must be compatible, the manufacturer’s stacking kit must be supplied, and the floor must be level and solid enough. We check this on site before stacking.

Can you take my old appliance away?

Yes. We can disconnect and remove the old appliance. Taking it away for disposal or recycling is a separate charge, which we include in your quote.

Which brands do you install?

All major brands, including Samsung, LG, Bosch, Miele, Fisher & Paykel, Electrolux, Westinghouse, Beko, Haier, Hisense, Smeg, Asko and Simpson. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any appliance brand.

What should I have ready before the appointment?

The new appliance delivered and inside the home, the old one emptied, and a clear path to where it is going. Keep the manual, hoses and brackets that came in the box, and make sure the taps can be turned off.

What do you need to quote the job?

The make and model, whether it replaces an existing appliance, and photos showing the space, the taps, the drain point and the power point. For dishwashers, include the cavity width and a photo of the kickboard. For ovens, say whether it plugs in, is hardwired or uses gas.
